    Captain I, Carlos L. Avina
    Fire Station 107

I was raised in the San Fernando Valley spending most of my time in Canoga Park and Chatsworth. I come from a large family of 12; including 6 boys and 6 girls and learned what it is to sacrifice by watching my parents as they worked hard and appreciated all the small things in life. My family comes from Leon Guanajuato Mexico. I now reside in Thousand Oaks with his wife of 32 years, Sandy, and their four children Nicholas, Christopher, Jason and Brittany.

As a child, I was always drawn to what was behind the yellow “caution” tape.  I would always stop and help people when they were in need. When I was eighteen I witnessed an accident on my way to work. Without any training, I stopped to help the victims who were trapped inside their car. It felt like only minutes had gone by when the Fire Dept. arrived. With few words said, members of the Fire Dept. went into action to free the patient. From that moment on, I knew what I wanted in life.

I was appointed to the Los Angeles Fire Department on 03/15/1990.  I was assigned to several assignments throughout the city of Los Angeles including South Los Angeles, Downtown L.A., Hollywood, and Van Nuys. I have been involved in the Disaster Preparedness Unit where I trained many members of the community on how to survive a disaster. I helped with translating the Dept.’s Disaster Preparedness Booklet from English to Spanish. Throughout my years in the Fire Dept. I have gone to hundreds of structure fires, hazmat incidents, traffic accidents and medical emergency calls. I have been through the city disturbance, brush fires, earthquakes, El Nino, and I have helped save the lives of many people that were close to death. The greatest joy that comes to mind is when I helped bring a new life into the world.

I have given myself and my time working in the Boy Scout Program, coached my kids’ soccer teams, and helped with my church’s disaster preparedness program.

I continue to strive to better myself, as a husband, father, and as Captain in the Los Angeles City Fire Dept.

I have been a real estate agent for 5 years.
